Children COunselling

What Is Children COunselling?

Children’s counselling supports 3 to 12-year-olds in understanding and managing their emotions, behaviours, and relationships. At PSYWELL, we recognise that every child expresses themselves in their own way. Our approach focuses on play and art therapy, providing a safe and engaging space where children can explore their feelings naturally. This method does not rely on verbal communication but allows children to process difficult experiences through play. By expressing themselves in a familiar and comfortable way, they can work through challenges and develop emotional resilience.

Which Children May Need COunselling?

1. Developmental Disorders: Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) can benefit from play and art therapy to improve emotional expression, focus, and social skills.

2. Emotional Challenges:For children experiencing anxiety, depression, excessive shyness, or mood swings, counselling helps them develop emotional regulation and inner balance.

3. Behavioural Challenges:Children who struggle with hyperactivity, aggressive behaviour, or lack of attention can improve their behaviour patterns through behavioural guidance and psychological support.

4. Social Difficulties: For children who fear social interactions or struggle to make friends, counselling helps build social confidence and interpersonal skills.

5. Learning Difficulties:Children facing exam anxiety, academic stress, or school avoidance can learn self-management skills to handle academic challenges more effectively.

6. Special Circumstances:Children adjusting to family changes (such as parental divorce or relocation) or recovering from traumatic experiences receive warm support to regain psychological stability.

7. Separation Anxiety:Some children experience intense fear or distress when separated from their parents (e.g. going to school or when parents leave for a short period), often displaying crying, clinginess, or strong resistance to separation.

8. Night-time Fears or Dependency:Children who fear sleeping alone or frequently seek parental comfort at night may benefit from counselling to feel more secure and independent.

How to Book

1.Make a booking

All counselling sessions require at least 24 hours' advance booking.

You can contact us via email, phone, WeChat, or by leaving a message in the contact form. We typically respond within 2 hours to confirm the next steps with you.

2.Pre-counselling consultation

We understand that every child and family has unique needs. That’s why we offer a free 30-minute video pre-counselling session before starting formal counselling.

During this session, the therapist will meet with both the parent(s) and the child to discuss current concerns and family dynamics. Through a relaxed conversation, we aim to build trust and help the child feel comfortable with the counselling process.

3. Consultation starts

Each counselling session lasts 50 minutes, though the duration may vary depending on the situation. During the session, the therapist will use play, drawing, or relaxed conversations to better understand the child's emotions, behaviour patterns, and psychological needs.

If you need to reschedule or cancel, please contact us at least 2 working days in advance. For refund policies, please refer to our FAQ and Terms & Conditions (T&C).

Children COunSelling Q&A

Q1: My child is very shy and doesn’t like talking to strangers. Can they still attend counselling?

A: Absolutely! Many children feel a bit nervous at first, which is completely normal. That’s why we use gentle and engaging approaches, such as play and drawing, to help them feel safe and comfortable. Your child's emotions are our priority, and they don’t need to worry about talking—we have many ways to understand their feelings beyond words.

Q2: Do I need to stay with my child during the session?

A: For children aged 3 to 5 (depending on individual needs), we encourage parents to join the initial sessions to help establish a sense of security. As your child becomes more comfortable, sessions may transition to one-on-one time with the therapist. Regular parent check-ins will also be scheduled to ensure you stay informed about your child’s progress.

Q3: How will I know if the counselling is effective for my child?

A: Counselling is a gradual process, and its effects build up over time. We encourage patience, observation, and communication. Throughout different stages of counselling, we will review your child's progress together, focusing on areas such as emotional regulation, behavioural improvements, and social adaptation. Regular progress updates will help you understand the positive impact of the sessions.

Q4: Will a few sessions be enough to resolve my child’s issues?

A: Children's challenges develop over time, so resolving them requires patience and consistency. The number of sessions needed varies depending on the complexity of the issue and the child’s individual response to counselling. We create personalised plans tailored to your child’s needs and adjust strategies as necessary throughout the process. Rather than focusing on the number of sessions, we encourage you to look at the progress and positive changes your child experiences along the way.

Q5: What role do parents play in their child’s counselling? What is expected of them?

A: Parental support and involvement are crucial to a child's progress. Counselling is not just about helping the child—it also involves adjusting the family environment and improving interaction patterns. A child’s emotions, behaviour, and mental well-being are often closely linked to the family atmosphere, making parental participation key to the effectiveness of counselling. Throughout the process, we will maintain open communication with you, offering guidance on improving parent-child interactions and communication styles. By creating a stable and supportive environment, you help your child feel more secure and open to change.
